Note: This outline is taken from one of my middle of the night chat
conversations with Audrey - she saved it and claims it's a perfectly
adorable little plot bunny and deserves a fate other than the trash
can. The girl saves EVERYTHING, it's ridiculous. But seeing as I
was just rambling off this idea, there are likely parts that make no
sense. If you're interested in adopting, feel free to poke me
sometime when I'm actually awake and ask what the heck I meant. This idea came about sometime during season three. If this were an actual episode, I'd only use it as the show finale because I kill off a main character. Also, change the bomb to something else. That was just the first thing to come to mind and totally cliché. Heck, even the actual show did the whole bomb/timeloop thing. I came up with this idea before that ep aired, but it just goes to illustrate exactly how cliché it is. ----- It starts out as just another day in Sanctuary. Brennan is reading a book by the reflecting pond, Shal and Jesse are sparring in the dojo, and Adam and Lexa are trying to save the world from evil or something. Just as Brennan is turning a page, he thinks he sees a small ripple in the pool, as if a single drop of water just fell into it. He gets a weird feeling, but he pushes it aside and merely calls over to Shal, asking her if she dumped any more goldfish in there as a joke. She responds that she got into enough trouble the last time, so he shrugs it off and says he gets to play winner. Jesse shouts that it’s going to be him right before Shal knocks him flat on his back. Brennan just laughs and goes back to his reading while they battle it out for the winning point. Anyway, Shal finally wins and calls to Bren that he’s up. Jesse leaves, warning Bren that she plays dirty, so kick her ass. He smiles, more than happy to. But before he can, Adam calls them with a new mission. There’s some research facility that’s apparently following in Genomex’s footsteps. So they’re going to go in undercover to investigate. So yada yada yada, Jesse, Shal, and Lexa go for a tour, pretending to be potential investors or whatever. While there, Jesse runs into an old friend from school. He gives her his cover story, but she seems distressed and tells him he doesn’t want anything to do with the place. He asks her why, but she tells him to just trust her. He says he can’t take that for an answer this time. Then they both ask if there’s something more going on here that they should know about. So they agree to get lunch and talk. Lexa gets all upset about him not paying attention to the mission, or possibly about him paying attention to a girl other than her. Whatever, she's Lexa, she's always upset about something. So Jesse and his old friend have lunch and make some awkward small talk before getting to the point. Like how he dropped off the face of the earth shortly after high school, and she’s now married to her old boyfriend who just got a new job working at the company Jesse is investigating. But something is obviously wrong, and she finally tells Jesse that something bad is going to happen there. Jesse asks if it’s something bad that her husband is involved in, or something bad like the time Rebecca Potter (random name) stayed late after swim team and hit her head on the diving board and would have drown if she hadn’t pulled her out, despite Jesse swearing he saw her in the library on the opposite side of the campus at the same time. She asks him why he never confronted her if he knew all these years. He replies that everybody is allowed certain things that they have no explanation for. She responds with ‘Like you?’ and he nods. She asks him if he’s still claiming he dodged the time he got in a fight and one of the punches went right through him. Instead of answering, he changes subject and tells her that he’s really undercover investigating the company. She comes clean and says he’s apparently not the only person with a problem with it. Somebody set a bomb in the building and it’s going to go off at midnight. Her husband was working late and died. She’ll be told they identified his remains tomorrow morning. She came back in time to stop it. Jesse asks her if she’s planning to just make up an excuse to get him to not be there. She says she could, except that the body count had reached 23 when she came back. So they need to stop this from happening. And she hasn’t even told her husband she’s a mutant. Jesse asks why not. She says she’s been in therapy and had almost convinced herself it was all in her head. She hasn’t used her powers in years. Jesse says she should have told him, and she asks if he ever told Alisha (his ex that the stupid show gave him). He sees her point. He promises to help her. And he gets the whole MX team on it. So Jesse’s friend, Shal, and Lexa go back to the company and try to figure out if the bomb is there yet and where it is based on her knowledge from the future. Jesse is researching to figure out what kind of device they might be dealing with. Brennan is tracking down possible leads for who all would want to blow the place up. And Adam is sitting on his ass, only occasionally yelling at them all to ‘FOCUS.’ Shal, Lexa, and Jesse’s friend find the bomb (it’s on a timer), and Jesse is back at sanctuary, researching a way to disarm it. And Brennan meanwhile breaks into the house of the guy he thinks is responsible. Adam is still just being Adam. And we’re approaching the eleventh hour now. Since Shal and Lexa are too dumb to do anything, Jesse goes to help them disarm the thing. While he’s on his way, Brennan is confronted by the guy who set it. He tells him they know it’s him and they already found the bomb, so he should give up and turn himself in. But the guy instead just blows the thing remotely before Bren can stop him. Since they thought they still had time, Jesse’s friend, Shal, and Lexa all just got blown up. Jesse was just arriving and massed when it blew, so he’s fine. But he got a front row seat of the fireworks. During all the angst, the bad guy manages to pull a gun and shoot Bren. Bren zaps him, but it’s too late; he’s already been hit. In the chest, lots of pain, possibly grazed his lung. He did find out one thing though, the passcode to disarm the bomb was the birth date of the guy’s daughter. He believes the company killed her, and all his malpractice suits were ignored. But it doesn’t matter now because everything’s already gone to hell. Jesse’s friend is dead, so none of it matters. So Bren has pretty much given up. He’s obviously dying. Then Emma is suddenly with him, and he just goes along with it, thinking she’s his delusion or something. She tells him he can’t sleep now, or he’ll never wake up. And he needs to stay awake until Jesse and Adam can get there. And it takes them a while, so he talks to Emma. Yada yada yada, horribly touching moments and all that. She’s keeping him awake. He eventually asks her if she was there with Shal when she died. Emma says no, nobody was. And nobody was with him any of the other loops either. They’ve been doing this loop for eternity – but time is relative, so really this is the first time. She goes on to say it would be against the rules, because Shal isn’t going to die. If somebody went to be with her, it would mean they were there to basically take her soul. And time is just a concept that she can’t explain in any way he’ll understand. But once a soul moves on, it means it was their time and they’ve crossed over. So if the time loop repeated again, she’d still be dead. That confuses him, but he can’t really focus anymore at this point anyway. He says but she’s there with him and she replies that yes, she is. Then he wants to know, if she can visit him whenever she wants, why not before now? She says it doesn’t work that way. Nobody would ever let go and move on with their lives. She’s there for Brennan now because he needs her to be. It's the only way to break the loop, otherwise this day will keep repeating forever. Eventually Adam and Jesse get there. Bren is barely hanging on, and there really isn’t anything they can do. Then Emma tells Bren that Jesse knows how to fix things. Bren relays that to Jesse. He doesn’t understand and asks Brennan what he means. Bren doesn’t know, he’s only repeating what she told him. And Jesse is like certain now Brennan is just totally slipping away. Then he starts to drift, but Emma is right there with him. She tells him he needs to tell Jesse what he knows. Then Brennan somewhat understands. Bren asks for a sheet of paper, and he writes down the code to disarm the bomb, then he gives that and his ring to Jesse, and he tells Jesse to give it to his friend. Jesse replies that she’s dead. They failed and can’t fix things. Bren says not this her, the other her, the one it hasn’t happened for yet. Then Jesse finally gets a clue and says they’ll get it right next time. Adam asks how when his friend is dead. But Jesse knows she was in two places at once before, and Brennan just reminded him of that. So when she goes back in time, there are two of her. So right now, she’s still waiting for tomorrow morning to be told her husband is dead. Then she’ll go back and it will all happen again. Bren decides he can let himself sleep now; and next thing he knows, this all won’t have happened. Fresh start on the next time around. But Emma looks sad and says she’s sorry but somebody had to interfere to stop the loop. And then he realises maybe she truly is there and not just in his mind. And it all finally dawns on him. He’s the problem that’s been making time constantly repeat with nobody knowing it’s happening. Emma broke the loop and kept him awake long enough to give Jesse and Adam what they needed to save Shal and Lexa. But it has a cost. He lifts his hand to Emma and says he’s ready. He tells her to do what she came to him to do. She takes his hand and the pain disappears and she helps him to stand up, no longer a part of his body. Then his hand falls lifelessly to the floor. He holds Emma’s hand more tightly, knowing there’s nothing Adam can do now and that he just died. He goes with Emma without looking back. Then we jump back to Sanctuary. Brennan is reading, Shal and Jesse are sparring, and Adam and Lexa are doing whatever it is that they do. They’re focusing or something. Emma is standing beside Brennan, knowing what has to be done, and a tear rolls down her face and falls into the reflecting pool. Bren says he goes against winner and then continues reading while he waits. Emma closes her eyes and vanishes back into the timeline as Jesse’s friend resets things. Then Bren just drops. The match ends, and Shal calls to Bren that he’s up. Jesse goes down the steps, calling to Bren to kick her ass. Then he notices Brennan’s book looks like it was carelessly dropped and he’s lying still and not moving. Jesse rushes to his side but can’t get him to wake up. He runs to get Adam while Shal stays with Bren. Then we cut to later and Adam informs them that Brennan is dead. He’s uncertain about the cause but it’s possible there was a problem with Brennan’s mutancy that couldn’t have been predicted and that none of them saw coming. But it seems that Brennan died instantly. Then Lexa tells them she’s getting a hit off Bren’s ring, and it’s not coming from inside the Sanctuary. So they end up back at the company where they meet Jesse’s friend. She tells Jesse ‘this is for you’ and gives him the ring and sheet of paper. Adam runs a test on the paper and it turns out it’s stained with Brennan’s blood (and written in his handwriting) and it’s less than a day old. So they believe the time travel story and stop the bomb. The end (of the series)
